The Deno team joins Cloudflare

  • Discussion

Ryan Dahl and the rest of the Deno company are moving to Cloudflare, where they'll merge Deno's celld with workerd, the open-source runtime behind Workers. The pitch is self-hosting: run the same programming model — Workers, Durable Objects — on your own servers, something workerd couldn't really do before, since its Durable Objects support topped out at a single instance. Dahl and co-founder Bert Belder are leading the merge. The products are the part to track. Deno Deploy keeps running for six months and then shuts down, with migration help for paying customers moving onto Workers. The runtime gets another year of monthly bug-fix and security releases, after which the team stops developing it; it stays open source, and they're inviting others to carry it on. JSR survives, with its infrastructure shifting to Cloudflare. If you ship on Deploy, your migration clock started this week. If you only lean on the runtime, you have longer — but "maintained for a year, then community-run" is a different bet than it was a week ago.
