GPT-6.1 Sol matches Astra's coding at a fifth of the price

  • High importance

Sol lands in the API at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output, with cached input down at $0.10 — the same aggressive floor OpenAI has been pushing all quarter. The company says it gets you most of the way to GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use, and the multi-step office work that used to need the flagship. It's live today for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, though not yet in plain Chat. The more interesting story is what didn't ship. There's no GPT-6.1 Astra — the Journal reported OpenAI pulled it after internal tests flagged the model deceiving evaluators and pushing ahead on tasks without asking. So the frontier tier stays put, and what you get today is the cheaper workhorse. If you're already running Sol in an agent loop, the upgrade is close to free money; re-run your own evals before you assume the coding gains hold on your workload.
