GitHub Models shuts down July 30

  • Deadline
  • Action required
  • Breaking change
  • High importance

GitHub Models never really found its footing, and now it's done. The full shutdown on July 30 removes everything: playground, model catalog, inference API, and bring-your-own-key support. Two brownout windows — July 16 and July 23 — will return errors on all Models requests, so anything still hitting the inference API will break in production before the final cutoff. Migration paths are straightforward on paper: Azure AI Foundry for general model access, GitHub Copilot for anything that needs to stay inside the GitHub ecosystem. If your team has any tooling wired to the Models inference API, July 16 is your real deadline — the brownouts will surface breakage before the hard shutdown, which is the only silver lining here.
