Python's Steering Council Gives JIT Compiler Six Months to Formalize or Face Removal

  • Discussion

After two releases as an experimental feature, Python's JIT compiler now has an ultimatum: produce a formal PEP through the standards process within six months or be removed. The Steering Council's move signals impatience with the JIT remaining in an indefinite experimental state without a clear governance path. The decision doesn't kill the JIT — it creates a forcing function. A successful PEP would give the feature a defined scope, stability contract, and maintenance ownership. Whether the JIT team can move fast enough through the PEP process in half a year is the open question.
