GitHub Enterprise Live Migration Lets Teams Cut Over from Azure DevOps with Under 30 Minutes Downtime

  • Announced

Enterprise Live Migration addresses the biggest friction in large-org moves from Azure DevOps Repos: the forced freeze. Instead of locking the source repo and praying the migration finishes fast, ELM starts syncing changes to GitHub Enterprise Cloud immediately while the team keeps committing to Azure DevOps as normal. When a team is ready, they schedule a cutover — Microsoft says typical downtime runs under 30 minutes. The feature is in limited public preview, currently script-based, with a UI coming. It supports migrating multiple repos together and works with GitHub Enterprise Cloud's data residency option. Teams operating under strict data-locality requirements get coverage without a separate negotiation. Whether "under 30 minutes" holds at scale for repos with dense history remains the real test.
