The directive came fast — the model had been available for Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise users across VS Code, JetBrains, and Xcode for roughly 72 hours before the curtain fell. Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5 remain accessible. Fable 5 had an unusual data retention clause — Anthropic kept prompts and outputs for up to 30 days for safety classification, unlike the zero-retention treatment applied to other Claude models in Copilot. Whether that contributed to how the suspension played out isn't confirmed, but it's the obvious thing regulators would have noticed.
