US Government Orders Anthropic to Suspend Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Over Export Controls

  • Discussion

The directive landed on June 12 at 5:21 PM ET. Because Anthropic cannot verify user nationality in real time, it shut off both models globally — not just for foreign nationals. Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5 remain available. The specific concern: a jailbreak involving asking the model to read code and identify software flaws, plus a separate claimed jailbreak of Mythos 5. Anthropicʼs response was pointed. The company complied but published a statement arguing the demonstrated vulnerability is 'relatively simple and widely available from other models,' and that applying a one-jailbreak-equals-recall standard would 'essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers.' That's not just Anthropic defending its product — it's a shot across the bow about how the government's authority is being exercised. Fable 5 had been available free to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users through June 22; that access is now gone pending a resolution.
