Apple Introduces Liquid Glass Design Language at WWDC 2026

  • Announced
  • High importance

Liquid Glass is Apple's first platform-wide visual overhaul since iOS 7, replacing flat surfaces with translucent materials that blur and layer to convey depth. Elements respond fluidly to interaction, appearing to carry and refract light rather than sit statically on a canvas. The approach leans on layering over shadow — a deliberate departure from Material Design's elevation model. Every Apple platform ships the new language simultaneously, which means apps targeting any of the five OSes will need to revisit their visual hierarchies. Existing components that rely on opaque backgrounds or heavy borders will look visually inconsistent against the new system chrome.
