Snowflake and Databricks Both Want to Own the Agentic Layer Above Your Data

  • Discussion

The framing is useful: data platform is now table stakes, and the real fight is over which vendor becomes the intelligent interface sitting between users and the underlying compute. Snowflake came out of its June Summit with CoWork and CoCo — collaborative agent products — while Databricks is embedding Genie Space as an iframe inside enterprise tools, with compliance-profile workspaces going GA in June. Both moves are bets that whoever controls the agent controls the relationship. The harder question the piece raises is whether either can actually win that layer against Microsoft Copilot and Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, which start with distribution advantages most data-platform vendors can only dream about. The piece doesn't resolve it, but the tension it describes is real — and if you're architecting data stacks right now, the "who owns the client" question is worth thinking through before your next vendor renewal.
