KotlinConf 2026 Keynote Unveils Kotlin 2.4.0 Preview, Wasm Beta, and Agent Client Protocol

  • Announced
  • High importance

Kotlin 2.4.0 ships as a preview with the usual ergonomic and safety improvements, but the headline policy change may matter more long-term: starting with this release line, the standard library receives backported security fixes across active releases for 18 months — a commitment that brings Kotlin closer to enterprise-friendly support windows. On the tooling and platform side, Kotlin/Wasm reaches Beta with support in modern browsers, putting full-stack Kotlin in reach for teams willing to run ahead of stable. JetBrains also announced co-leadership of the Agent Client Protocol, an open standard defining how IDEs and coding agents communicate — a move that positions Kotlin tooling squarely in the AI-assisted development conversation. JetBrains' own Junie agent picks up dedicated Android support as part of the same announcement.
