GitHub Copilot for Eclipse Plugin Goes Open Source Under MIT License

  • Shipped

It's an interesting line to draw. The IDE front end — completions, chat UI, agent wiring — is now MIT-licensed at github.com/microsoft/copilot-for-eclipse, but none of that touches the model or the Copilot service. The practical read: GitHub wants the Eclipse community to maintain and extend the plugin without GitHub needing to staff it, and transparency about how the IDE integration works is a reasonable concession when the actual product is the cloud service. Eclipse still has a meaningful user base in enterprise Java shops, and the move signals that GitHub isn't ready to write off that segment. Whether the open-source model attracts real contributors or just reassures procurement committees remains to be seen.
