Percona sponsors pgBackRest to keep PostgreSQL backups running

  • Announced

pgBackRest, one of PostgreSQL's most widely used backup and recovery tools, was at risk of losing active maintenance after primary maintainer David Steele was forced to step back due to a lack of sustainable funding. Percona joined a group of sponsoring organizations to bring Steele back to dedicated development, covering bug fixes, feature work, and community engagement. The move highlights a systemic risk across open source infrastructure: critical projects depending on a single maintainer with no reliable funding path. For teams running PostgreSQL in production, pgBackRest underpins backup strategies at thousands of organizations. Percona is also working to broaden the contributor base and recruit additional sponsors, reducing single-point-of-failure exposure in the PostgreSQL ecosystem.
