Figma Launches Full MCP Server with Code-to-Canvas Workflows and Variable Engine

  • High importance

Figma released the production MCP Server alongside its May 2026 roundup, providing a remote endpoint at https://mcp.figma.com/mcp and an optional Desktop MCP mode. Four new agent skills ship with the server — /prototype-to-figma, /figma-generate-design, /figma-generate-library, and /figma-use — enabling agents to translate between running prototypes and Figma canvas representations. Three named workflows structure common tasks: Code to Canvas (import production component structure into Figma), Design System Sync (keep library tokens aligned with code), and Canvas Exploration (AI-assisted layout iteration). The variable engine is the most consequential addition for teams already using Figma Tokens or Style Dictionary pipelines: designers can refine token values inside Figma and changes push to code tokens in real time, collapsing a historically manual handoff step. Combined with the open MCP standard, this positions Figma as a two-way code-design bridge rather than a one-directional export tool. Teams using Code Connect (React, Swift, Android bindings) should review the new /figma-use skill, which can resolve component-to-code mappings through the same server interface.
